Sumatran Ethical Expeditions
Your one-stop-shop for ethical jungle treks, fully customisable tours and deluxe Sumatran accommodation !
Hello and welcome to our little slice of jungle paradise! We are the Mo-Juntaks, a Batak-British family who've spent the past 5 years running our jungle trekking guesthouse, situated in Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra! We pride ourselves in providing first class jungle treks through the Gunung Leuser National Park and beyond! For guests interested in diving deeper into the Sumatran culture have a range of cultural experiences on offer, along with extended tours throughout the greater island of Sumatra. We aim to provide you with an ethical and educational trek, no doubt delivered with a sprinkling of comedy, as a little bit of humour gets you a long way in the jungle!
SEE and Sumatra Expedition Lodge
Once upon a time, a teacher from England ventured to Sumatra and fell in love; deep love, with the community, the culture, and a rather special jungle guide. In 2018, Sumatran Ethical Expeditions (SEE) was born, a North Sumatran activities and transport provider specialising in 5* jungle treks through the Leuser National Park.
After many years of dreaming and scheming, Sumatra Expedition Lodge opened its doors to keen jungle trekkers in early 2022. The seven, double bedrooms are fitted with western ensuites, air conditioning and fans, and overlook the village, padi fields and mountain range (which, on a clear day, even sports Sinabung volcano). The lodge comes complete with ample parking, a small children's playground and yoga hall, along with authentic opportunities to connect with real locals.
The lodge is located 25 minutes walk from the Bukit Lawang Tourist centre, in the traditional village of Jawa Dalam (;the villagers here are predominantly from the island of Jawa, and emigrated to Sumatra in the early 70's and 80's). Our in-house restaurant is open 07:00-20:30, however we are a mere 5 minutes walk from the local high street, where many delicious local late night delicacies can be found. On the highstreet you can also find two supermarkets, multiple pharmacies and news agents along with the Bukit Lawang Trust, the charity that brought the teacher to Sumatra in the first place!
The Lodge offers many off site cultural experience, to ensure our guests experience the true breadth of what the area has to offer, and to share the good fortune with the greater community.
We hope we get the chance to share our love of both our village and jungle with you.
